Configuring a computer for a static IP

When you attempt to access the user interface for the device and are prompted for a username and password, you may receive the following error message:

This page cannot be displayed

Cause A

This issue may occur if you have Internet Explorer patch Q832894 and a firmware version of 1.42 or earlier. Microsoft released the patch on February 2, 2004 as part of a cumulative security patch. You can read about this patch by visiting the following web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-004.mspx

If this is the case you need to use the Opera web browser

Cause B

If you have firmware version post 1.43, then your network may be configured incorrectly. This is most likely the cause of different IP Addresses on the network. All computers on the same network must be on the same subnet. For example, if one computer has an IP of 192.168.1.100 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 and a different computer has an IP of 192.168.0.101 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, the computers will not be able to talk to each other. Two things must happen: A) Change the IP of one of the computers so the first three sets of digits match, leaving the last set unique on the network, or B) change the subnets on both computers to 255.255.0.0.

Run the NAS Finder Utility. Record the IP address it found the NAS. If you have the Server Appliance or Web Server product, the IP address of the unit is 172.16.1.1.

  1. Click on Start -> Run and type "Command" in the dialog box. Click OK.
  2. Type "ipconfig" at the DOS prompt. Record the following entries:
    • IP Address:
    • Subnet Mask:
    • Default Gateway:
  3. Compare the NAS IP address and your computer's IP address. Make sure the first three sets of numbers for the IP addresses match. For example, if the NAS IP is 169.254.52.3 and your computer IP address is 192.168.0.100, you will need to change your computer's IP address to 169.254.52.x, where x is different than the NAS IP. This is only a temporary change. For more help on changing your IP address, see your Windows Help.
  4. If the IP addresses are within the same range, (for example, the NAS is 192.168.0.101 and your computer is 192.168.0.100), you should be able to access the NAS User Interface. If not, turn off all Firewall software or try a different computer, or try the Opera web browser (free at www.opera.com).
  5. If you needed to change your computer's IP address as per Step 4, you should now be able to access the User Interface. Click on the Configure button in the NAS Finder Utility. Logon to the UI.
  6. Go to Basic Settings. Change the IP address to "Fixed IP." With the information you gathered in Step 3, type in the following:
    • IP Address: (Important: leave the last set of the IP address different than your computers IP address. We recommend the last set to be '252.')
    • Subnet/Netmask:
    • Default Gateway:
  7. Click Apply and the NAS should reboot. You may get an error message saying that the NAS could not be found. Change your computer's IP address back to what it was.

Alternative Method

If you are still unable to access the UI or PING the unit, then it is possible that you have an updated version of a Service Pack, or are using IE7, Firefox 2.0, or Opera9. To work around this issue, you follow the steps outlined in KB article T4070-1700
