If you are running a Mac OS X or greater system and attempt to copy files to the storage device, you may receive one of the following errors:

  • An error code of -50 or -33 and are no longer able to copy files to the device.
  • Data loss or empty files .
  • Files on the NAS may have the wrong program associated with it.
  • Unable to delete files off the NAS.

To check if you are using the Extended Volume, Select the hard disk in the Finder and choose the Get Info command in the File menu. The format information will specify either Mac OS Standard or Mac OS Extended.

Error codes -50 and -33 refers to a file that is being copied to the unit that contains invalid file name characters (* / \ : < > " | or sometimes -) and/or that the file name may exceed 32 characters. This happens on systems running the Mac OS X Extended Volume with Journaling.

Apple recently introduce a new feature called "Journaling." This has caused some problems with transfering files to the units using the Apple File Sharing protocol.

As a temporary fix, you must make sure that the character names are no more than 32 characters long, and that the following characters are not used:

* / \ : < > “ | -

Also, you may disable AFP in the NAS and use SMB to connect.

To connect using SMB, go to GO > Connect to Server... and type in smb://ip-string-of-nas or smb://nas (where nas is the name of the NAS, assuming you did not change it).

If you still experience problems, you can connect using FTP to the NAS as the protocol.

Tritton Technologies will continue to work on this problem and post a permanent solution when we find one.
